It’s the LITTLE things that sometimes bring the most pleasure.
Like a PERFECT donut.
Last Sunday, I needed a break from being at home, so I drove west to Santa Monica and typed into yelp “best donut”
Side Car Donuts (on Wilshire and 7th) was at the top of the list.
I parked, put on my mask and was initially surprised to see over a dozen people in LINE FOR DONUTS
I HATE waiting in lines…but was already there….so I took my spot at the back.
After about 20 minutes, I finally entered.
Inside, the entire store was TINY.
There were 2 servers in front of long rows of donuts and behind them at least 5 chefs forming, frying, and decorating the donuts.
I chose 5 donuts: Old Fashioned, Strawberry Cream, Cinnamon, Huckleberry (like Blueberry) and Birthday Cake.
These donuts were larger than your typical donuts. Outside of the store, I couldn’t help but try one.
With one bite, my eyes lit up!
The Old-fashioned had an amazing, slightly crispy sweet exterior…but it was the inside of the donut that shined.
The dough part of the donut was moist, flavorful and just perfectly chewy.
It wasn’t dry and chalky like most donuts.
I raced home and Liz and I basically devoured the rest of the donuts with some excellent coffee.
On a sugar high, we walked the dog and enjoyed that fun, euphoric feeling of a tasty sweet.
Check them out if you’re ever in West LA, as they are worth the wait!
And while you’re waiting, think of how much fun your kids can have this summer learning to cook healthy foods in a virtual cooking camp.
Because then on the weekends you can treat them to a donut!
Get Cooking,
Chef Eric
(note, in this pic we biked to Side Car..hence why my hair is a mess)
