Rules of the Culinary Classroom

While cooking with kids there are 5 important rules to keep in mind.  These are rules that we bring up in EVERY cooking class.

  1.  Don’t Talk While The Chef Is Talking
  2. Don’t Touch Anything Before The Chef Tells You
  3. Be Safe With Knives
  4. Taste Your Food Before You Serve It
  5. Have Fun!

In a cooking classroom, discipline is very important to ensure safety.  Our Chefs go over these rules routinely and the better kids understand the importance of kitchen safety, the more effective your class will be.

Equipment Basics

To teach cooking, you’ll need to adapt how you might cook at home without a stovetop and pans.  You will need:

  • Cutting boards for you and your students
  • Chef knife for you and metal butter knives for students
  • Extension chord
  • Electric skillet, we like the Oster brand 12″ skillet
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Tongs, Spatula and other cooking essentials
  • Nearby sink (very important to maintain cleanup)

Your First Lesson: Tomato-Basil Bruschetta

Class Number One:  Your first class will be one of our most popular recipes: Tomato-Basil Bruschetta.

Why We Chose This Recipe:  Kids enjoy this dish because it’s easy, delicious and a great snack they can make right when they get home.  It’s also healthy, loaded with vitamins from the tomatoes and basil, plus it uses healthy fats like extra-virgin olive oil.

Follow the teaching style we use in the video and you’ll have a successful first class.

Two Bonus Lessons:  Veggie Quesadillas with Mango Salsa & Cauliflower Veggie Fried Rice

The following week, the kids have a had a great class.  Encourage them to bring samples home and they’ll be excited for the next lesson.

Class Number Two:  Veggie Quesadillas with Mango Salsa

Why We This Recipe: Quesadillas is a perfect step up in difficulty and teaches kids how to make a veggie-filled dish.  There’s also a lot of chopping involved, plus learning how to season the mango salsa.  Quesadillas are familiar to kids, but here we load it with bell pepper and onion, then serve it with a very flavorful salsa.

Class Number Three:  Cauliflower Veggie Fried Rice

Why We Chose This Recipe:  It’s a POPULAR dish, with over 53,000+ views on our youtube channel.  Again, we’re only using basic equipment and I filmed the whole recipe in one take.  Most kids have NEVER tried cauliflower in this way and it will impress their taste buds.  It also impresses parents that we can get kids to eat cauliflower and have it taste as good as fried rice.
